Swedish Research Provides Solution for Untreatable Patients

A patient with a large cranial tumor was successfully operated by neurosurgeons at Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden during the summer of 2017. During the surgery, the majority of the patient's cranium was substituted with a personalized implant from OssDsign. The implant material is the result of research carried out at Uppsala University.

The patient, who arrived in Uppsala in early 2017, suffered from a tumor which had infiltrated the skull over the course of five years and penetrated through the cranium. The patient underwent surgery twice in June, during which a majority of the tumor could be removed. As the tumor had infiltrated the patient's skull, approximately 70 percent of the cranium was removed during the operation. The removed cranial bone was replaced by a specially engineered implant from OssDsign. The implant, which was designed to match the patient's anatomy, consists of a 3D-printed titanium mesh that provides protection and mechanical strength. The titanium mesh is embedded within a ceramic material developed at Uppsala University. Research and clinical experience have shown that, over time, the material is replaced by the patient's own bone.

More than two months have now passed since the surgery, and the patient is doing well without lasting neurological problems. The patient case will be followed up and analyzed for future publication in a scientific journal.

OssDsign's implant technology has been introduced in Europe and the USA, and has previously been used to treat several hundred patients, although this is the largest replacement of cranial bone to date.

"It is very rewarding to know that we can use our knowledge and technology to contribute to helping patients with extensive problems such as this," says Anders Lundqvist, CEO at OssDsign.
